BRAINERD, Minn.–Larco, a leading supplier of door access solutions, has announced a new access control system for doors, gates and other entry points. The Guardian II™ access control system helps building owners and facility or property managers easily control, update and know who has access to secure areas. Compared to other access control systems, the Guardian II system offers easy installation and management, enhanced control, increased security and affordability.

The Guardian II system is a stand-alone, non-networked solution that does not require connection to a central controller. Instead, the Guardian II controllers, located at each controlled access point, independently determine whether a user is authorized to enter. The system uses rugged, electronic memory keys to program controllers, identify users and retrieve audit-trail information.

The complete Guardian II system consists of:
• Controllers installed at each access point
• Electronic user keys, admin keys and export keys
• Administrator kit (software and key programmer)

“The Guardian II access control system really stands apart because it eliminates a lot of the drawbacks of other systems,” said Tom Shirk, sales and marketing manager for Larco. “With the Guardian II system, you don’t have to pull cable to each access point, which keeps installation costs down. The electronic keys are more durable than plastic cards, and if someone loses one, you don’t have to re-key the locks like you have to do with mechanical keys—you just block the key. The Guardian II system is also more secure than keypads, as codes can be easily passed on or learned by unauthorized users. It’s more straightforward, affordable and reliable, while still letting you control access to secure areas by nearly any measure you could ask for.”

Organizations can affordably use the Guardian II system to control as few as one door or gate. Controllers are available in four models, each designed for a particular mounting type. The non-networked controllers only require a 9-12 volt power source—there are no communications cables to pull. This simplifies installation and reduces installation costs, especially in remote or challenging locations. The non-networked design also makes it easy to add additional controllers in the future.

Fully encrypted user keys offer better security and more access control options than mechanical lock-and-key systems. Access to secure areas can be regulated by user ID, user group, access point, day, time and many other variables. Lost or stolen keys can be easily blocked using the administrative software, eliminating the cost of re-keying locks.

Easy-to-use software allows for simple management and more flexibility than most other access control systems. Administrators can manage multiple controllers and locations from a single computer. In addition to providing control over access to secure areas, the software offers the ability to generate detailed reports from extensive audit-trail information stored on each controller and user key, giving administrators complete information regarding access and usage.

Yes. Our sister company, Datakey Electronics, developed the (first-generation) Guardian access controller in 2000 for the marina market. Like the Guardian II system, the original Guardian system used Datakey Electronics’ rugged, electronic memory keys, but the memory keys used by the Guardian II system use different electronics. The original Guardian access control system provided basic access control—granting access based on users and groups only. The Guardian II system is a totally new design and comes with a host of additional features and capabilities, including: data encryption for all keys, recording of audit trail information, configuring controller types (admission or restriction) just to name a few.
